Chlorine Dioxide Application in Ships' Ballast Water
Overview

Ballast water is used to maintain the stability of ocean going ships. But they easily cause harmful organisms transmission, including plankton, seaweed, fungi, organism ovum, cyst and larvae. Ballast water contamination was listed as one of the four marine pollution hazards by Global Environment Fund (GEF) Organization.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted International Convention for the Control and Management of ships' Ballast Water and Sediments in 2004. It regulated newly built ship since 2009 and the entire ocean going ships must install ballast water processing equipment. Ballast water can be discharged after disinfection, sterilization, and killing living beings until up to sewage disposal standard. After Convention is in force, ships will not move into port of IMO member state. Otherwise, they will encounter sanctions and punishment.

Chlorine dioxide is ranked as the A1-level security, efficient disinfectant by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are recognized as the best disinfectant by the U.S. FDA and other nations' health and environmental agencies . In ship ballast water treatment it has the following advantages:

1.Strong bactericidal ability and broad-spectrum: The oxidation capacity of chlorine dioxide is 2.63 times more as chlorine preparations’ disinfects quickly and thoroughly. Various algae, bacteria, viruses, plankton eggs and larvae are effective.

2.Environmentally friendly, safe and reliable: the reaction of chlorine dioxide is the final remnants of salt and water, no pollution, no "three-induced effect" including carcinogensis, teratogensis and mutagensis, no accumulation, and will not produce secondary pollution to the environment.

3.Simple equipment, low cost: You can use just after a simple plastic package with bottles of medicine put into water. Low cost of fixed assets, installation, maintenance; the use of molecular chlorine dioxide 1g generally can handle about 1 ton of ballast water, also low of pharmaceutical costs.

Chlorine Dioxide Treatment for Ballast Water:

1. Ship Ballast Water Structure and the Distribution of Dosage Points:

(1) Ballast water tanks: air pipe is the best channels to input and spread disinfectant .
(2) Deep tanks: the top hatch can be used to inject disinfectant.
(3) Oil tank: simple structure, disinfectant proliferation after put into the water tank.

2. Disinfection Method:

(1) Drug concentration: According to the water quality of ballast water, the concentration of chlorine dioxide dosing control in 0.5-1.0ppm.

(2) Dosage: According to water quality and quantity terms of different compartments and count chlorine dioxide, input every dosing point.

(3) loop: a cabin common pump through pipeline pump chlorine into the opposite tank, or around the drainage adequate mixing, can also through the board using fire hose and air pipes make ballast water back to the original cabin, so water mixed with disinfectants.

(4) Results Determination: After cycling 30 minutes, qualified up to 0.5ppm of residual chlorine detected.
